The
International Codes Council (ICC) held public hearings on code change
proposals for the ICC International Performance Code on March 22-23
in Portland, Oregon. Kimberly Marks, ASID, IIDA, represented the Interior
Design Code Alliance at the hearings and testified on the ICC International
Performance Code (IPC).
As the International Performance Code is currently written, only an
architect or engineer can be in overall responsible charge of a project
that uses the Performance Code. Other design professionals may only
participate on the design team. The Interior Design Codes Alliance submitted
seven code change proposals to amend the IPC to allow for more open
participation by registered interior designers in the performance-based
design process. Despite our testimony, the committee accepted only one
of the proposals.
The International Performance Code (IPC) was initially set to be published
in 2002, but problems with the code may delay its publication until
2003. The ASID National Codes Network lead by Kimberly A. Marks, ASID,
IIDA, will continue fighting to ensure that interior designers are not
excluded from IPC.
